- Covington Automotive Repair Service
A few basics:
Does your car have a timing belt?
Most later model vehicles are now equipped with a timing belt. To be sure, check with your local service professional. Those vehicles which do have a timing must have them changed at regular intervals to avoid engine damage. Most need to be changed at the 60,000-mile service check-up. Some may go as high as 90,000, before they need to be changed. The point is to find out if your vehicle has a timing belt. Ask your service professional when you need to change it. Your vehicle is the second biggest investment most of us will make. Take care of it! If you need a list of recommended service schedules, we can print one out specific to your car. Come by anytime to get it. Prices start at just $375.
How often do I need to change my oil?
Most manufacturers suggest oil changes at 7,500 miles. If you do it at those intervals, they will probably sell you a new car a lot sooner than you would like. It's 7,500 miles under ideal conditions. Most of us must drive in conditions that are not ideal for your oil. Change it every 3,000 to 5,000 miles. Oil starts to break down after approximately 50 hours of use or about 3,000 to 5,000 miles. This will serve two purposes: (1) it will prolong the life of the engine and prevent repair problems, and (2) a problem may be found during this service before it becomes a bigger problem.
Antifreeze?
Change your antifreeze every two years or 30,000 miles. The ability to prevent freezing doesn't wear out, but the ability to fight corrosion in your cooling system does.
